Playground Safety Surfacing

PLAYGROUND SAFETY SURFACING

When kids are playing tag, climbing ladders, sliding down slides, and doing all the other adventurous things you’d expect on a playground, accidents are bound to happen. Falls aren’t uncommon in this environment—you might even go so far as to say they’re unavoidable. What is avoidable, however, is injury from those falls. That’s where playground safety surfacing comes in.

While playground surfaces are put in place with safety in mind, not all of them succeed in that goal. Some playground surface options are simply safer than others. The ones we work with fall into the latter category, and that’s not by accident. Everything we do is done with safety in mind, including what playground safety surfacing we choose to offer to customers.

CHOOSE YOUR SAFETY SURFACING

There are two main types of safety surfacing to choose from, with further customization offered within each.

Unitary Surfacing

This is a uniform option of safety surfacing, meaning the parts stay in the same position. There are two ways to install it: Poured-in-place or rubber tiles. For poured-in-place, materials composed of rubber, recycled tires, or polymer are poured in and solidified, creating a singular surface with no seams. Rubber tiles, on the other hand, are fit together to create a solid surface that spans the desired playground area.

This kind of surfacing offers plenty of benefits:

  • Accommodation for individuals with wheelchairs and other mobility-aiding devices
  • Usability in various settings and weather conditions
  • Full coverage of your playground
  • Customization in the form of color and style, helping you get creative with designs

Loose-Fill Surfacing

Rather than coming in one solid piece of ground, loose-fill surfacing is made of several smaller pieces—generally made from engineered wood fiber, rubber nuggets, or rubber mulch.

There are plenty of benefits enjoyed by this option, as well:

  • Cost-effectiveness
  • Softer landings in the event of a fall
  • Drainage efficiency
  • Ease of installation

It’s important to note that this is very different from regular mulch, which is not ADA compliant and doesn’t meet safety standards for playgrounds. Loose-fill surfacing is designed specifically for playground and the safety of everyone using them.
